The best night in wrestling every week is of course Wednesday! With AEW Dynamite and NXT going head to head each week, wrestling fans are treated with not one, but two shows to watch. This week, NXT treats us to show titled New Year’s Evil. With two title matches tonight, including the NXT title match, NXT was sure set to be a monumental show! Here’s the recap of the show, plus my “One Good, and One Bad” from the show!
Karrion Kross (with Scarlett) defeated Damien Priest
As expected, these two put on a hard hitting match. Kross defeats Priest with running forearm to the back of the head.
NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar (with Legado Del Fantasma) defeated Gran Metalik (with Lince Dorado)
Good back and forth Cruiserweight title match, with Escobar retaining. Escobar tried to rip off Metalik’s mask in order to distract Metalik, which worked. The match was won after Escobar hit the Phantom Driver for the pin fall.
Xia Li (with Boa, and ???) defeated Katrina Perez
This represented the return to NXT for Xia Li and Boa, but were accompanied by the mystery person. Li wins in a short, but aggressive match. The three stand tall on stage after the match.
Announcement: Timothy Thatcher is unable to compete after a training injury. NXT GM William Regal assures us that the match between Thatcher and Tomasso Champa will happen, and it will be in the Fight Pit.
Raquel González defeats Rhea Ripley (Last Woman Standing Match)
This match was exactly what both of these talented women would be expected to put on! Raquel González dominated this match from start to finish, with a chokeslam through the stage sealing the win for her. Numerous spots for both women in this match. Could this be the end of Ripley in NXT with the Royal Rumble looming?
Shotzi Blackheart & Kushida defeated The Way (Johnny Gargano and Candic LeRae
A mixed tag team match broke out after The Way were interupted by Shotzi Blackheart and her tank. The Way made their way to the ring from outside the Performance Center with a police escort for some reason. Kushida pins Gargano with roll up, hopefully setting up a program between the two.
NXT Champion Finn Balor defeats Kyle O’Reilly
Another classic hard hitting match between the two, as they rekindle their rivalry from 2020. Being the technical wrestlers they are, both O’Reilly and Balor picked a body part and went to work. Balor focused his attacked on the jaw of O’Reilly, while O’Reilly focused his attack on the arm of Balor. In the end, Balor made O’Reilly tap out with a submission move focused on the jaw.
ONE BAD: Dexter Lumis
For the record, I’m a fan of the Dexter Lumis character. But, you cannot have a host of a show without that person speaking. Lumis is in an intriguing character, but I feel as though the writers of the show don’t know what to do with him and his character anymore. Hopefully, we can see Lumis continue in this character, but maybe going in a different direction can push Lumis towards a main event status. Again, I like the guy, but we may have hit the ceiling on what the character can accomplish.
ONE GOOD: Raquel González
You could easily put the title match in this spot, but González’s performance cannot be ignored, and wasn’t by myself. Both Ripley and González put on a great match between the two female powerhouses of NXT. With another González win, this could be the start to a push in NXT for her, but could also signify the end of Rhea Ripley’s tenure on the black and gold brand. I would be one the people who enjoy a Raqual González and Io Shirai title match.
