Friesen Wins, Locks Himself In Championship 4

Friesen Wins, Locks Himself In Championship 4

From the start, Stewart Friesen was playing catch up Friday at ISM Raceway. However, with a shot at the championship on the line, Friesen rallied after an early race penalty to secure the victory, and more importantly, a chance to bring home the Gander Outdoor Truck Series Championship.

After starting on the front row at the green flag, Friesen crossed the start-finish line before pole sitter Austin Hill, which resulted in a start violation and a trip to the back of the pack for the following restart after a lap two yellow flag. Friesen finished stage one in ninth position, and moved up even further to finish fourth at the end of stage two.

“We were able to pass ‘em all, pass ‘em all clean. Great race car, great race team. We’ll all celebrate tomorrow, and then it’s game on. We’ve got a badass piece for next week, too,” Friesen stated in victory lane Friday.

Coming back after a lap two spin, Brandon Jones finished in second position driving the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 51. Chandler Jones finished in third position, while Ben Rhodes finished in fourth. Grant Enfinger finished in fifth to round out the top five and put two ThorSport trucks in the top five.

Defending Gander Outdoor Truck Series champion Brett Moffit, Ross Chastain, Matt Crafton and Friday’s winner Stewart Friesen will all battle next weekend for the 2019 Gander Outdoors Truck Series Championship at Homestead.

Missing out on the chance for the championship were Austin Hill and Tyler Ankrum. Ankrum sustained damage to his truck early on in the race, forcing him to settle for a 26th place finish six laps down. After starting on the pole, Austin Hill and his team could not find a set up that could gain them speed on the restarts. Hill’s 13th place finish was not enough to get him into the Championship 4.

Stay tuned this week for an in depth look at the 2019 Gander Outdoors Series Championship 4 challengers, as we dive into who has the best chance and who we think will walk away from Homestead as the champion!
