French Grand Prix puts Hamilton back on top

While everyone was fearing the French Grand Prix would turn into a snooze fest like the undeniably boring Canadian Grand Prix, it turned out to be the very opposite. Chaos early in the race put two of the most fearsome drivers at the back of the pack, leading to some spectacular racing.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes managed to keep P1 for the majority of the race and finished beautifully in first place. His victory here allowed him to retake the points lead from Sebastian Vettel.

This marks the third consecutive occasion where the title leadership has exchanged hands. Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas was not as lucky, as he made contact with Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, going into the first corner of lap one.

This collision punctured Bottas’s left rear tire and substantially damaged the front wing of Vettel’s Ferrari, putting the two drivers at the back of the pack. Vettel would race out of his skin and claim 5th place, while Bottas would take home 7th.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing also put on an excellent show, taking 2nd place at Paul Ricard. This marks his second consecutive podium finish, a welcome turn of events after his woeful start in 2018. Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari also had a strong race, displaying some masterful overtakes on the likes of Daniel Ricciardo to take 3rd on the podium.

Notable absences from the race included the entirety of the Force India team.

Esteban Ocon made contact with Pierre Gasly of Torro Rosso on lap one, putting them both out of the race. In the waning laps, Ocon’s teammate Sergio Perez retired with engine trouble. Fernando Alonso of McLaren, in an astonishing turn of events, succeeded in finishing the race. This put an end to his two-race DNF streak due to mechanical issues with his car.
