Free Agency Preview: Green Bay Packers

Free Agency Preview: Green Bay Packers

Welcome to the Game Changer Sports Network Free Agency Preview series. Today we take a deep dive into the Green Bay Packers Free Agency outlook. In this series we will be looking at all 32 teams over the next few months and breaking down their key free agents going into the off-season. We will also predict if they re-sign or walk to go get paid.

Green Bay lost the NFC Championship game this season without any extra help for Aaron Rodgers on the offensive side of the ball. They go into the 2021 offseason with a total of -21 million in cap space. They are going to have to make some cuts or restructure some deals in order to bring anyone on this list back into the fold in 2021. This is the Green Bay Packers free agency preview!

Green Bay Free Agency Preview: Key Free Agents

RB Aaron Jones (27 Years Old)

Jones isn’t quite the center of the Green Bay offense, but he is definitely a key member. The center of the offense is Aaron Rodgers. Jones’ 201 carries were 10th in the league and his 1104 rushing yards was 4th in the league. In the passing game he had 47 receptions that went for 355 yards. He had a total of 11 touchdowns in 2020. In his four years in the NFL Jones has rushed for 3,364 yards and 37 touchdowns. His 16 rushing touchdowns was the most in the NFL in 2019. He is a 2020 Pro-Bowler who is a legit threat in the passing game.

Running Backs have a very short window shelf-life to make the big money. Aaron Jones is currently in that shelf-life. Green Bay will be unlikely to give him that contract. When he hits the open market he will sign a contract in the ballpark of 4 years, $60 million. Yes, Aaron Jones is going to sign a deal that will make him the second highest paid Running Back in the NFL.

Prediction: Free-Agency

TE Robert Tonyan Jr. (27 Years Old)

The lumberjack of the frozen tundra had a breakout season in 2020. He finished the year with 52 receptions for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. He beat his stats from any other season by almost 5 times the amount. In his first two seasons as a Packer, he only had 14 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Tonyan became a top tier Tight End for Rodgers in 2020 and he doesn’t plan on slowing down in 2021.

Big Bob Tonyan is going into this off season as a Restricted Free Agent. If he was hitting the open market then there would be a flurry of teams interested in him. As a RFA who will probably get a tender if a new deal isn’t worked out the market goes down. I expect after the season that he had that he will get a transition tag and any contract he gets offered will be matched by the Packers.

Prediction: Re-Signed

C Corey Linsley (30 Years Old)

Since being drafted Linsley has been a key starter on the offensive line. He has started in 99 games since his first season in the league. Linsley played in all 16 games four out of seven seasons. He is also coming off his first All-Pro team appearance in 2020. Linsley did not have a single penalty on him this season. He also only allowed a single sack on Aaron Rodgers this season. His Pro Football Focus grade for 2020 was an 89.9.

Linsley is coming off a three year, $25.5 million contract that was singed back in 2017 after his rookie deal expired. He has been with Green Bay since he was drafted back in 2014. He is due a big pay day and I would look for the contract to be somewhere in the range of 3 years, $30 million.

Prediction: Free-Agency

WR Allen Lazard (25 Years Old)

Lazard played in 10 games this season in which he finished with 33 receptions for 451 yards and 3 touchdowns. He had a Pro Football Focus grade of 71.7 for the 2020 season. Lazard is a good reliable option off the bench but he will never be a every weekend starter.

Lazard won’t command a big contract in free agency. The contract hes coming off of was for a single year worth $675K. Statically he had almost an identical year to last season. His value has not risen or fallen over the course of the 2020 season. He will most likely get a deal for one year and $850K.

Prediction: Re-Signed

CB Kevin King (26 Years Old)

The Packers second round pick in 2017 has shown flashes of greatness in his four years with the organization. He has never been able to stay consistent with those flashes though. On 51 targets King gave up 35 receptions. King missed five games this year due to injury and just couldn’t get his footing back. He is still young enough where he can have a breakout year at any time, however, it looks like the writing is on the wall for King and Green Bay

Kevin King did not have a good NFC Championship game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and that very well may come back to haunt him. Scotty Miller burned him with almost no time left on the clock to end the first half and give Tampa Bay another touchdown. If he hits the open market then I would expect a two year deal worth around $2/2.5 million per year on average.

Prediction: Free Agency

G Lane Taylor (31 Years Old)

Taylor missed the entire 2020 after suffering a knee injury in the first game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings. He also missed almost all of the 2019 season after suffering a bicep injury in the second game of that season. After two seasons of injury there is a good chance he will not return to the packers in 2021.

Taylor restructured his 2020 contract to stay with the Packers. His base pay for the 2020 season was 910K with a signing bonus of $1.25 million. If he gets another deal from any team across the league I would guess the deal will be a one year, cheap prove it deal.

Prediction: Retired

RB Jamaal Williams (26 Years Old)

Williams has been an above average role player for the Packers since joining the team in 2017. The fourth round pick has hovered around the 500 rush yards in every single season he has played in the green and gold. In his four seasons he has 1,985 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. He is also a reliable receiving back for the Packers.

With the addition of AJ Dillion to the Packers backfield there is a good chance one of the Running Backs is on their way out. Aaron Jones is probably the one most likely to be out and on a new team in 2021. If Williams takes a lesser money deal then they are more than likely going to bring him back. On the open market he can make somewhere around $3 million per year.

Prediction: Re-Signed
