A couple days ago, the Maple Leafs proceded to trade away Kasperi Kapanen to the Pittsburgh Penguins in an exchange that included six players. They received the 15th overall selection in the next entry draft as a part of the trade.
Kyle Dubas, the team’s general manager, has a lot of work ahead of him if he wants to make Toronto a contender.
Following yet another disappointing postseason performance against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Maple Leafs are preparing for a major restructuring of their lineup. While they’re known for being top heavy, Toronto should look to move some high cost players to bring more depth to their lineup.
According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, the team’s front office has made four other players available for trades. This group includes starting goalie Frederik Andersen along with Pierre Engvall, Alex Kerfoot and Andreas Johnsson.
Dubas has also made it clear that the 1st round pick acquired from Pittsburgh could be moved for the right price. A team like Toronto, who’s close to being a contender, should have no problem trading away picks for immediate help.
If we take into consideration that they will probably also lose both Ceci and Barrie to free agency, we could see a totally new squad in Toronto next season.
It’s going to be interesting to follow along and see what Dubas will do to make his team a contender. We will keep updating on the situation as the offseason goes on.
