Federer Takes Stuttgart Title

Federer Takes Stuttgart Title

In his first tournament in two and a half months, Roger Federer made a triumphant return by defeating Canadian Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) at the Stuttgart Open on Sunday.

Both players served well in the first set but the difference came in the third game when Roger was able to break Raonic on his serve. Milos then had a chance to break him right back in the next game when he had two break points on Federer. He failed to capitalize on them though and Federer held on his service games to win the set.

The second set was much of the same with each playing strong but it was Federer who was able to take it in the tie-breaker.

The title win gives Federer an amazing 98th career title and on Monday he will ascend back to the No. 1 ranking.

Federer now leads the head-to-head matchup 11-3.

Raonic has been plagued with injuries on and off for the past three years. He had a great tournament this week, though, to give him some confidence heading into the bulk of grass court season.

It was Milos’ first final since he reached the final in Istanbul in May of 2017.

Next up for these two players will be Halle for Federer and Queens for Raonic. Both tournaments start on Monday.
