On Friday as the Houston Astros came to visit the Chicago White Sox, no one could have predicted what would happen during the game. We don’t mean the pitches, the plays, or the at-bats, but rather the incident in the dugout which caused Danny Farquhar to collapse and be immediately rushed to the RUSH University Medical Center where he was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage and ruptured aneurysm.
Since the incident, Farquhar has undergone a successful surgery, and Monday the team released that he is progressing well in critical but neurologically stable condition. “Farquhar has use of his extremities, is responding appropriately to questions and commands and is speaking to doctors and his family,” the official White Sox report read. He is expected to remain in the ICU at RUSH where he is surrounded by his wife, Lexie, and family for the next couple of weeks while continuing treatment and remaining under close monitoring from his neurosurgical team.
Tweets from around the league and baseball fans in general were abundant as the incident happened and news spread throughout the community. The White Sox have kept his jersey, number 43, pinned in the dugout and bullpen since his absence to show their unity as a brotherhood. The Tampa Bay Rays, a former club of Farquhar, has also kept his jersey within their bullpen.
“It makes you not take life for granted, that’s for sure. It can definitely happen to anyone, but regardless if it’s anybody in this clubhouse is close to, the brotherhood that we have will continue to stick with them and be here for anything that anybody needs at any time,” White Sox pitcher Carson Fulmer stated in a press conference.
The White Sox do intend to release additional information as it becomes available. The club would also like to thank their fans as well as the baseball community for all the well wishes and support they have received for Farquhar.
For those who wish to send personal ‘Get Well’ cards and their thoughts the club has released the following address, where they will accept and pass on the mail to Farquhar.
Guaranteed Rate Field, 333 West 35th Street, Chicago, IL 60616
