Erling Haaland to miss rest of 2020 due to injury

Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre announced on Wednesday that his super striker, Erling Haaland, is set to miss around a month after he received a muscle tear around his hamstring. According to the gaffer, the Norwegian apparently suffered the knock during training earlier this week. Favre also marked the club’s busy schedule so far this season as being directly responsible for the injury.

Nevertheless, Haaland’s temporary departure will be a big deal for the BVB. The 20-year-old superstar has not only been one of Dortmund’s most important players, but also one of the best players in the world this year. Over Haaland’s 14 appearances so far this season, he’s already notched a dizzying 17 goals in all competitions. To put into perspective just how incredible that goal total is, the rest of his team has a combined 21 goals.

When looking at a possible replacement for the wunderkind, Dortmund could look at a few possible options for the next six or so matches. Normally this would probably prompt Favre to utilize young attacking midfielder/striker Reinier, however he’s currently down with Coronavirus and could be out for a similar time period as Haaland. So in that case, look for the Black and Yellow to utilize any combination of Marco Reus, Thorgan Hazard, or even Dortmund’s incredibly exciting 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko. If it was me in charge, I might have to give the call to Moukoko if only to be known as the first manager to give this potential superstar his first real opportunity.

Nevertheless, it should be interesting to see how Favre and the rest of Dortmund deal with this unfortunate situation. Over the next month, they’ll be taking on the bulk of the Bundesliga’s mid table fare in Eintracht Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Union Berlin, and they’ll also complete their Champions League group stage next week against Zenit St. Petersburg. Luckily for them, they’ve already clinched a spot into the knockout rounds, so they can ease the breaks a bit in that match and hopefully reload in time for the Round of 16 next month.
