Durant to Opt Out of Player Option, Become Un-restricted Free Agent This Summer

Let’s be honest…we all know KD is not going anywhere. Chris Haynes from ESPN reported that Durant intends to opt out of his player option this summer to restructure a longer term deal that is worth more money.

If you remember last summer, Durant took a significant pay cut and signed a 2-year, $53 million dollar contract to help the team re-sign Sean Livingston, and Andre Iguodala. There was a player option included in that second year so he could have the option of restructuring a deal later while still being able to obtain what they needed then. Seems like it worked out for both sides. Don’t you wish all players had this type of sacrifice for the team attitude?

Kevin Durant is going to get paid, and he deserves every penny. There has not been any reports since this news came out about the details of what his potential new contract may look like, but I can guarantee he will not be taking another pay cut.

I know what you’re thinking. “How can he be getting a huge contract this summer, and how will Golden state still be able to keep all their players?” Surprisingly, the Warriors team payroll doesn’t look that worrisome at all. I don’t know what Durant’s contract will look like but no matter what next season, in addition to him they still will have Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, Sean Livingston, Jordan Bell, and Damion Jones still under contract.

Notable NBA stars that have left money on the table to enhance their chances at winning: LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Tim Duncan, Dwayne Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, and Shaquille O’Neal.
