The Chicago Cubs have traded pitcher Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres, according to multiple reports.
Catcher Victor Caratini was included in the trade and will also head to San Diego. In return, the Cubs received pitcher Zach Davies, outfielders Ismael Mena and Owen Caissie, and shortstops Reginald Preciado and Yeison Santana.
Last season, 34-year-old Darvish finished second in Cy Young Award voting in the National League after recording an 8-3 record with a 2.01 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 76 innings.
27-year-old Davies recorded a 2.73 ERA last season for the Padres over 12 starts. Over six MLB seasons, he has a 3.79 ERA split between the Padres and Milwaukee Brewers.
The two outfielders and two shortstop players that the Cubs will receive are the 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th ranked prospects in the Padres system. All four are 20 years old or younger.
The trade for Darvish comes just one day after the Padres acquired starting pitcher Blake Snell from the Tampa Bay Rays, further adding to the team’s depth and a shot at a lengthy playoff run next season.
The Chicago Cubs lost 2 games to 0 to the Miami Marlins in the Wild Card Round of last season’s playoffs. The San Diego Padres were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS.
