Mike D’Antoni Out in Houston

Mike D’Antoni is out as the head coach of the Houston Rockets.  According to sources the veteran coaches agent has informed the team that he will not return as their head coach and will become a free agent.  Speculation about this move had been gaining steam for some time as the coach had turned down extension offers from the team prior to this season.

In his four years as Rockets head coach they made the Western Conference Finals once, falling in 7 games to the Golden State Warriors, and 3 times to the conference semifinals. He also achieved the best winning percentage in the Western Conference at .682 during his run as coach. D’Antoni will be a hot candidate for several coaching openings this offseason, and it has been reported that the Philadelphia 76ers are interested in interviewing him for their coaching vacancy.

The Houston Rockets will look to change courses after committing to D’Antoni’s small ball lineup. The next head coach will have to figure out a better way to utilize the unique talents of the Rockets stars in Russell Westbrook and James Harden. It might be a difficult pill to swallow for fans and ownership, but it might be time for a rebuild in Houston. It will be interesting to see what direction the organization chooses to go.
