Dalvin Cook Carries The Vikings To The Divisional Round

The Minnesota Vikings defeated the New Orleans Saints in overtime 26-20 in the Wild Card round of the 2019 NFL Playoffs. Dalvin Cook had a lot to do with the Vikings offense bringing this game home. Kirk Cousins seemed to be off his game but he held on long enough to keep them ahead. They Didn’t need a productive day for the Defense to keep them in it.

Dalvin Cook was a key factor in this game as he went 94 yards on 28 Attempts and two touchdowns. Stefon Diggs had just two looks in regulation and then a very important third down catch in overtime. Adam Thielen had an early fumble but he never looked back as he finished the game with seven catches for 129 yards.

The defense shut down the red hot New Orleans offense. Alvin Kamara probably should have stayed in bed this morning. Danielle Hunter was all over Drew Brees for most of this game. Anthony Harris had a very important interception at the end of the first half that stopped the Saints momentum at the time. Everson Griffen and Danielle Hunter both finished the game with 1.5 sacks.

Cook got lucky late in the game. He was tackled for a loss when he hit the ground and then fumbled it. The fumble was returned for a touchdown. However, the knee was down and he was down by contact. This left a 2nd and 17 at their own 40 yard line with 3:24 left on the clock.

At this point they were still only up 20-17. the Vikings looked like they wanted to run the ball to waste the clock at this point. It didn’t work. They gave Drew Brees the ball back with plenty of time.

The Saints had a crucial illegal formation with :21 seconds left on the clock that caused a ten second runoff on the clock. The Saints are just barely in field goal range at this point. They forced Lutz to kick a 49 yard field goal at the end of regulation and he nailed it.

In overtime, the Vikings got the ball first. After three minutes Kirk Cousins throw a beautiful 43 yard pass to Adam Theilen to put them on the two yard line. That may have been the best throw of his career. The Saints defense managed two huge stops on Dalvin Cook before Cousins throws the 4 yard touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph to win the game.

The Vikings move onto the NFL Divisional Round next weekend where they will head to San Francisco to take on Jimmy Garopollo and the number one seed 49ers.
