Conor McGregor Announces Return! What’s Next?

Conor McGregor’s return is a much anticipated return for most casual and hardcore fans in the MMA community. The last time we saw The Notorious in the octagon, was when he lost his title in a lopsided affair with Khabib Nurmagomedov ending with a brutal neck crank in the fourth round in 2018.

In a recent interview, Conor McGregor revealed his return date for January 18th, 2020 in Las Vegas Nevada. McGregor also revealed some of the potential matchups for his return, and also what he plans to do throughout 2020. If you guys missed my article on October 17th on the awesome potential fights that he could return with, you can check that out right here.

One of the biggest things that’s been of concern to most fans is Conor’s commitment to fighting and consistency. We as fans want to see him make headlines bouncing peoples heads off the canvas or making waves with fights we wont ever forget. He mentioned in his latest interview, that he plans to be more consistent and plans to be all in with his preparation leading up to fights much like he did when he was on the rise.

According to sources with ESPN, Donald Cerrone and Justin Gaethje are being considered but between the two fighters, Donald Cerrone is the front-runner. The fight with Frankie Edgar was shut down by Dana White and the UFC, despite the fact that McGregor and Edgar were strongly pushing for the fight to happen. McGregor also mentioned that he would like to fight the winner of Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal sometime in 2020 and predicted that Nate Diaz would win the exchange.

We could potentially see most of the fights that I listed in my last article if the cards fall into place. If Tony Ferguson defeats Khabib in their title bout, its highly likely that the cards fall right in place for a lot of dream matchups to happen. Tony Ferguson obviously isn’t a matchup that is set to happen right now, as he is rightfully set for a title fight with Khabib. But, if he becomes a title holder you could have a McGregor vs. Khabib for a number 1 contender slot later down the road or depending on circumstances, a direct title fight between McGregor and Ferguson or visa versa. The same scenario could happen even if Khabib successfully defends his title.

Cerrone and Gaethje are incredible fights that I mentioned previously and a win over either of them depending on the fallout or the quality of the fight, could launch Conor right into position for immediate title fight. You combine that with the fact that he wants to also fight the winner of Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal (another dream scenario)…. next year could be absolute FIREWORKS. Whether you love him or hate him, there’s no denying that when Conor is in mix, things are so much more entertaining and competitive. MMA fans around the world should be excited for what’s to come.

If he can shake all the negative headlines and put a lot of controversy to rest, I fully expect that he can return and be back right where he left off. He must first take care of his personal life. That’s the most important thing of all. He has to get out of his own way for once. Depending on how a lot of these issues turn out, also dictates the path of his career. Can he move past this? How does he respond?
