College Football Conference Power Rankings: Week 5 (9/26-9/28)

A week that saw two top-25 games, two top-25 teams going down to unranked teams, and the, then, #1 team barely making it out alive against a unranked conference opponent, week 5 of the college football season proved that, even if you’re ranked, every team is out for blood…no matter who they may be. Here is your College Football Power Rankings by Conference at the end of week 5:

bigonsports.com

American Athletic Conference

1.) #18 UCF Knights
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: After passing for 281 yards and three touchdowns against UConn (1-3), QB Dillon Gabriel is now on track to break the school record for most passing yards in a single season for UCF. WR Gabriel Davis also put up near record numbers for the Knights, hauling in 119 yards and catching all three of Dillon Gabriel’s touchdown passes. RB Adrian Killins Jr. wasn’t going to let the rest of the offense do all the work, as he rushed for 77 yards and scored one touchdown. The Knights travel to Cincinnati (3-1) next week in a showdown of two of the top AAC teams.

2.) #24 SMU Mustangs
Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #3
Bottom Line: 1986…the last year the Mustangs reached the top-25. Fans of SMU have to wait no longer, as the Mustangs finally reached the promised lands of the top-25 bringing with them a 5-0 record…their best to start a season in school history. Last week, they beat South Florida pretty handily, 48-21, with RB Xavier Jones rushing for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Their next game comes against Tulsa on October 5th. Will the Mustangs manage to stay undefeated and move up the rankings?

3.) Memphis Tigers
Record: 4-0

Atlantic Coast Conference

1.) #2 Clemson Tigers
Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Falling to #2 in the top-25, Clemson had one hell of a scare this week against what should’ve been a walk-through team…the UNC Tar Heels (2-3). With a final score of 21-20, the Tigers narrowly escaped utter disaster to their season and what, quite possibly, would’ve thrown them out of the top-5 in the country. The game came down to a North Carolina 2 pt. conversion to take the lead and deal Clemson their first lost of the season, but the Tigers’ defense stuffed the North Carolina offense, sealing the victory. Clemson hosts former National Champions Florida State on October 12th as they look to remain in playoff form and retain their ongoing undefeated season.

2.) #22 Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Jumped up three spots from #5
Bottom Line: Wake Forest who? If you were to tell any college football analyst, at the beginning of the season, that the Demon Deacons were going to go undefeated through the first five games and become ranked, they would’ve looked at you and said that you’re a lunatic. But Wake Forest has done just that. Beating Boston College over the weekend 27-24, Wake Forest has remained a surprise talk coming out of the ACC this season. QB Jamie Newman lead the team with his 102 rushing yards, bringing his season total to 514 total rushing yards, not to mention his 243 yards passing and two touchdowns during the game. With 1521 total passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and three interceptions, Newman is certainly proving his versatility this season. He lead his team against the Louisville Cardinals after an upcoming bye-week.

3.) Pittsburgh Panthers
Record: 3-2
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #4
Bottom Line: After picking up their second win in-a-row, the Panthers go up against an up-and-coming Duke team who’s looking to prove to everybody in the ACC that they aren’t to be taken lightly.

4.) Duke
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up five spots from #9
Bottom Line: With their third win in-a-row, the Blue Devils are turning their attention to fellow up-and-comer Pittsburgh. With both teams trying to prove disbelievers wrong, this game should turn out to be an interesting shootout.

5.) #23 Virginia Cavaliers
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Dropped three spots from #2
Bottom Line: What looked to be a closer game than expected, the Cavaliers were looking great in the first half, scoring 10 unanswered points going into halftime. But once the second half started, they seemed to not have an answer to Notre Dame’s offense, allowing them to score 14 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter. QB Bryce Perkins throwing two interceptions certainly didn’t help their cause either since Notre Dame managed to score off of both. Virginia drops down to #23 in the top-25 and go on the road to face the Miami Hurricanes after a much needed bye-week.

6.) Florida State Seminoles
Record: 3-2
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #7

7.) North Carolina Tar Heels
Record: 2-3
Last Week Position: Jumped up four spots from #11

8.) Boston College Eagles
Record: 3-2
Last Week Position: Dropped five spots from #3

9.) Miami Hurricanes
Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #10

10.) NC State Wolfpack
Record: 3-2
Last Week Position: Dropped four spots from #6

11.) Syracuse Orange
Record: 3-2
Last Week Position: Jumped up two spots from #13

12.) Louisville Cardinals
Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Stayed #12

13.) Virginia Tech Hokies
Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Dropped five spots from #8

14.) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Stayed #14

Big 12 Conference

1.) #6 Oklahoma Sooners
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Following their thrashing of Texas Tech. 55-12, the Sooners remain #6 in the overall top-25 standings. QB Jalen Hurts is proving his candidacy for Heisman this year after throwing for 415 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. They won’t get their first true test, however, for another two weeks when they face off against #11 Texas. Until then, they must travel to face the Kansas Jayhawks in what should be a very simple win for Oklahoma.

2.) #11 Texas Longhorns
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: Longhorns had a bye-week.

3.) West Virginia Mountaineers
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #4
Bottom Line: Coming off their second win in-a-row, West Virginia is looking toward the horizon as they gear up to face #11 Texas this weekend. With Junior QB being, what some might say, underwhelming (871 yards, 6 touchdowns, 3 interceptions) compared to former QB Will Grier, the Mountaineers have a tall task ahead for the week.

4.) #21 Oklahoma State Cowboys
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up two spots from #6
Bottom Line: Just as fans did last week with the Florida Gators (5-0), the Oklahoma State fans are singing songs of the return of Cowboy football after their 26-13 win over then ranked Kansas State. With one lose, however, to the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma State’s future for the playoffs is very minuscule. They can however play spoilers to potential playoff team, and in-state rival, Oklahoma later this year, but until then, the Cowboys must get through the rest of the Big-12, starting with Texas Tech this weekend.

5.) Baylor Bears
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #5
Bottom Line: Baylor picked up a decent win against conference opponent Iowa State this past weekend. They remain undefeated, but also unranked due to their “easy” schedule thus far this season. They go up against formerly ranked opponent Kansas State this weekend, which, if the Bears can pull out win, should help their case to slide into the top-25.

6.) TCU Horned frogs
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #7

7.) Kansas State Wildcats
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Dropped four spots from #3

8.) Iowa State Cyclones
Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Stayed #8

9.) Texas Tech Red Raiders

Big 10 Conference

1.) #4 Ohio State Buckeyes
Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Can this Ohio State team be stopped? Critics of the team suggested that their first true test would be against Nebraska. The Buckeyes aced it by destroying the Cornhuskers 48-7 behind QB Justin Fields’ 212 yards passing and three touchdowns and RB J.K. Dobbins’ 177 rushing yards. After the game, critics are now saying that, “It was just Nebraska though!” When are they gonna learn to take this team serious, this year especially. They get another “test” this week, going up against #25 Michigan State, a team who has notoriously beaten Ohio State in the past.

2.) #8 Wisconsin Badgers
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: Wisconsin is proving to be locked into the 2nd place spot, in the Big-10, by picking up a win against Northwestern 24-15. I was a slow start to the game however, with the halftime score being just 7-3 in favor of the Badgers. But with some clutch defenses plays late into the game, Nebraska was able to seal the win and move on to 4-0. They face their last non-conference game this week against Kent State.

3.) #12 Penn State Nittany Lions
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #3
Bottom Line: Moving to 4-0 after an incredible 59-0 victory against Maryland this past weekend. Behind QB Sean Clifford’s 398 passing yards and three touchdowns and WR KJ Hamler’s 108 receiving yards and a touchdown, Penn State remains at #12 in the nation and goes against Purdue this week as they look to keep their undefeated season and playoff hopes alive.

4.) #14 Iowa Hawkeyes
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #4
Bottom Line: Picking up a win against Middle Tennessee 48-3, Iowa remains #14 in the top-25 for a second week in-a-row. QB Nate Stanley had one of his best games this season, going 17-25, 276 yards, and two touchdowns. Iowa RB Toren Young also had his best game of his career, rushing for 131 yards in the game. They get an interesting test this coming weekend against #19 Michigan. If the Hawkeyes want to move up in the top-25, it starts with the game against the, nearly failing, Wolverines.

5.) #19 Michigan Wolverines
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #6
Bottom Line: The Wolverines picked up a much needed win against Rutgers 52-0. If Michigan wants to turn the tide of their luck back to good, they will need to win impressively this weekend against Iowa. Another lose for the Wolverines will certainly spell disaster, knock them out of the top-25, and remove any hope they had of making it to a New Year’s Six Bowl game.

6.) #25 Michigan State Spartans
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Dropped one spot from #5

7.) Minnesota Golden Gophers
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Jumped up two spots from #9

8.) Maryland Terrapins
Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Dropped one spot from #7

9.) Nebraska Cornhuskers
Record: 3-2
Last Week Position: Dropped one spot from #8

10.) Indiana Hoosiers
Record: 3-2

11.) Illinois Fighting Illini
Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Stayed #11

12.) Northwestern Wildcats
Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Stayed #12

13.) Purdue Boilermakers
Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Stayed #13

14.) Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Stayed #14

Conference-USA

1.) Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Coming off a narrow win against Rice, 23-20, the Bulldogs continue their dominance moving to 4-1 on the year. They get a much needed bye-week this week as they look to get ready for their game against UMass on the 12th.

2.) UAB Blazers
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: Suffering their first lose of the year (20-13 lose against Western Kentucky), the Blazers get their “easier” games of the season against the, still, winless Rice Owls this weekend.

3.) Florida Atlantic Owls
Record: 3-2
Last Week Position: Jumped up three spots from #6

FBS Independents

1.) #9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Bouncing back and picking up a win against the, then, #18 Virginia Cavaliers 35-20. After some impressive defenses plays late into the 3rd quarter, the Fighting Irish managed to score two touchdowns to pull ahead in what was a tightly contested game in the first half. Notre Dame moves up to #9 in the nation and will look towards the future against Bowling Green this weekend in the hopes of making it back to the top-5 teams in the country and back into playoff contention.

Mid-American Conference

1.) Toledo Rockets
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #2
Bottom Line: That’s three consecutive wins for the Rockets now as they move to 3-1 on the year. They won a close contest against the BYU Cougars, 28-21, behind Junior RB Shakif Seymour’s season-high 96 yards rushing and getting his first rushing touchdown of the year with less than a minute left in the game to take the late lead, which eventually sealed their win. They get Western Michigan this weekend.

2.) Eastern Michigan Eagles
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Dropped one spot from #1
Bottom Line: Play every single down. No matter what time is left on the clock or what position your team might be in. That’s what Eastern Michigan player Mathew Sexton did. With less than 30 seconds left in the game, Central Connecticut was set to punt the ball off and call it a win, but Sexton blocked the punt, returning it for an Eagle touchdown and giving his team the win 34-29. They get in-state rival Central Michigan this coming week in what should be a great game.

Mountain West Conference

1.) #16 Boise State Broncos
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: The Broncos are starting to smell an undefeated season in the air as they move to 4-0 after beating Air Force 30-19 two weeks ago. But after their bye-week this past week, Boise State now starts a long stretch of “tough” games starting this week against their “weaker” of the next few teams, the UNLV Rebels (1-3).

2.) Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up one spot from #3
Bottom Line: It was an easy win against Nevada this past week for the Rainbow Warriors (54-3). Behind Junior RB Cole McDonald insanely impressive game, going 25-30, 312 yards passing, and 4 touchdowns. They get a bye this week before they go up against their toughest game for the season…Boise State.

3.) Wyoming Cowboys
Record: 4-1

Pac-12 Conference

1.) #15 Washington Huskies
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Jumped up two spots from #3
Bottom Line: After picking up their 3rd win in-a-row against, then, #21 USC, Washington is keeping their hopes of a Pac-12 title alive. Washington’s saving grace for the game was in their Junior RB, Salvon Ahmed, as he rushed for 153 yards and scored a touchdown. The Huskies get a feisty Stanford team, this week, who is looking to upset the Huskies and move to even this this year.

2.) #13 Oregon Ducks
Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: The Ducks are coming off a bye this past week as they look to their game against the previously ranked California Golden Bears.

South-Eastern Conference

1.) #5 LSU Tigers
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: LSU is coming off their bye-week, with a game against Utah State coming up this weekend.

2.) #1 Alabama Crimson Tide
Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Jumped up two spots from #4
Bottom Line: Alabama, yet again, proves that no team is a match for them after beating Ole Miss 59-31. That is, if those teams are unranked. Alabama has yet to go up against a top-25 opponent and actually get some competition. They do, however, get just that, after their bye-week, as they go up against #25 Texas A&M. But the Aggies have the possibility of no even being ranked by the time the two teams meet.

3.) #3 Georgia Bulldogs
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Dropped one spot from #2
Bottom Line: The Bulldogs come off a bye-week as they gear up to face a faltering Tennessee Volunteers team.

4.) #7 Auburn Tigers
Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Dropped one spot from #3
Bottom Line: The Tigers picked up a decent win against unranked Mississippi State this past week 56-23. But the Bulldogs should be the least of Auburn’s worries as they get a top-10 match-up against the #10 Florida Gators this weekend. This game holds a lot of power for whoever comes out on top.

5.) #10 Florida Gators
Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #5
Bottom Line: Picking up a win against FCS opponent Towson Tigers, the Gators, like Auburn, are gearing up to prove to the SEC, NCAA, and fans at home that Florida football is back on the map.

Sun Belt Conference

1.) Appalachian State Mountaineers
Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Their best season start just keeps on rolling as the Mountaineers picked up a win against Central Carolina 56-37. Touchdowns weren’t scarce in the game for Appalachian State as their QB Zach Thomas passed for two touchdowns and RB’s Darrynton Evans and Marc Williams rushed for two touchdowns a piece. With a win in their first Sun-Belt conference game of the season, the Mountaineers look to go up against their toughest contest yet…the Ragin’ Cajuns.

2.) Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns
Record: 4-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: Keeping the winning train going after a week 1 lose, Louisiana picked up a win against Georgia State 37-24. In a showdown of the top-two Sun-Belt teams, the Cajuns go up against the Appalachian State Mountaineers this weekend.

Predictions for Week 6

1.) Michigan will come out of this weekend unranked, leaving only one thing left that will save Coach Jim Harbaugh’s job…the Rivalry game against Ohio State.

2.) Michigan State gives Ohio State their toughest challenge yet, at least in just the first half as the Buckeyes take off with the game in the second half of the game.

3.) Auburn will narrowly escape their top-10 game against Florida beating them 28-24.

4.) Out of the ten undefeated teams ranked in the top-25 playing this weekend (Boise State, SMU, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Penn State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, and Iowa), only two will see their winning seasons snapped.
