Clint Capela Out 4-6 Weeks

If it is even possible, the Houston Rockets will now need even more from MVP star James Harden. Center Clint Capela is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to ligament damage in his thumb, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Capela was having a terrific season and had yet to miss any games so far while averaging 17.6 points, 12.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Houston will surely miss him from an offensive and defensive perspective. In a corresponding move, the Rockets recalled center Isaiah Hartenstein from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to help fill the void. Hartenstein, reserve center Marquese Chriss, and veteran Nene Hilario will be unlikely to fill in as well, with Nene playing no more than about 10 minutes per game (likely due to his age). While the Rockets are known to be actively looking for defending and wing support you can now expect them to try and trade for a more rounded center who can fill in for the big hole Capela is leaving.

This injury is just one of a slew of injuries the Rockets have had to endure this season. Chris Paul has been sidelined since December 20th with a hamstring issue and Eric Gordon, who was propelled into a starting role this season after the weird saga of Carmelo Anthony, has been sidelined due to right knee soreness. Both are hopeful to return by the end of January, according to sources.

After starting the season in a huge and surprising slump, the Houston Rockets jumped into playoff contention during December behind James Harden’s record-breaking streak in which he carried the team on his back due to the injuries. The former MVP launched himself into MVP conversation now that he is averaging about 40 points a game since December and has been notching at least 30 points since December as well. Houston is currently tied for 5th place in the West with the Clippers. The Western Conference in contentious this season once again with 6 teams currently only 5 games out of first place.

With Capela now out the Rockets will need Chris Paul and Eric Gordon back ASAP and will need to utilize the trading market in order fill the void due to these injuries.
