Cirque du Soleil to Interpret Messi’s Life

In a video where he was juggling a clown’s nose, Lionel Messi announced the collaboration to have the story of his life unfolded in a Cirque du Soleil show. While the show is being currently written and rehearsed, it will be ready to tour the world next year. The Argentinian’s influence seems to have spilled over beyond the soccer world.

Raised in an immigrant Italian family in the Argentinian city of Rosario, Messi had to overcome numerous difficulties that would put an obstacle runner to shame, and also justify the inception of the show.

In a country whose economy was undergoing one of its worst collapses, Messi’s parents raised him in an environment where soccer was perhaps not only the one recreational option, but also the only way out of a severely difficult country to persevere in. From the age of six, Leo was part of a local youth club that built a path for him to become a professional footballer in Argentina and most likely not further.

On the contrary, he eventually started to be considered a phenomenon of a player due to his small stature and ability to score and dribble easily. Messi was seen as a promising player whose run would be stopped by nothing, until a growth hormone deficiency diagnosis had to put his career to a halt at the age of ten.

After several broken promises to pay $1000-a-month treatment by local clubs (including his favorite Club Atlético River Plate), it was Barcelona’s management that took over as his caretakers. At the age of 13, he was placed in a position where he would have to become a much better soccer player for one of the best clubs in the world, in order for his condition to be treated.

Four UEFA Champions Leage titles and five Ballon d’Or awards later, Messi is being offered an interpretation of his life by a circus with a severe hint of a theatrical performance. For once, he will have to sit back and enjoy a performance of excellence (no, Cristiano Ronaldo is not part of the troupe), instead of being part of it.

Founded in 1984, Cirque du Soleil is the most successful theatrical production company in the world, having created dozens of titles which range from operas to Beatles music to Criss Angel shows. Now, they will touch a never before explored field, but which will for sure be a fun and exciting exhibition.
