Celtic Win 9th Consecutive Scottish League Title

This week, officials from the Scottish Premiership announced that their season will not continue due to complications from the Coronavirus. Yet, unlike in The Netherlands where they have voided their season outright, those in Scotland have agreed that results from this season will not be ignored and that they will crown Celtic as league champions for the 9th consecutive year.

Instead of selecting this year’s champion by using points, as they do every other year, they did so by comparing each club’s points per game. This is because Rangers and St. Johnstone have each played one game less than everyone else. Celtic led the way averaging 2.67 points per game and Rangers finished 2nd with a 2.31 score. Motherwell, Aberdeen, and Livingston round out the top 5.

This latest league title is the green and white’s 51st since the SPFL began way back in 1890. They are now only 3 titles away from matching their hated in-town rivals Rangers, who have an incredible 54. No club outside of Glasgow has actually won the league championship since Aberdeen won their 4th back in 1984-85.

Speaking on Rangers, this marks the first time since the 2011-12 campaign that they have finished runner-up. Over that 8-year absence, they were dropped all the way down to Scotland’s fourth division and had to scratch and claw their way back up to the Premiership. Under former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, “The Gers” appear ready for another sprint with their eternal enemy.

On the opposite side of the Premiership, Hearts have been relegated to the Scottish Championship. The Edinburgh-based club have long been a fixture in the Prem, and barring one season in the 2nd division in 2014-15, they’ve been in the top flight every year since 1983. They will be replaced by Dundee United, a club that hasn’t been in the league since the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
