Carolina Panthers @ Los Angeles Chargers Recap

A game with many story lines at kickoff, the Carolina Panthers traveled to Los Angeles to face the Chargers. How will the Panthers offense look without Christian McCaffrey? Will Justin Herbert build upon his strong performance last week? Let’s see how it unfolded.


Both offenses came out a little flat to begin the game. However, Carolina was able to move the ball in to field goal range twice, setting up two Joey Slye field goals. 6-0

The Chargers offense looked better at the beginning of the second quarter. Austin Ekeler capped off a 10-play drive with a 12-yard scamper for a TD. 7-6

The Panthers came out an once again got far enough into Chargers territory to set up a Joey Slye field goal. 9-7

The next Chargers drive ended after running back Joshua Kelley fumbled on the Panthers 43-yard line and the Panthers recovered the ball. Teddy Bridgewater capitalized on the mistake and drove the offense down the field, capping the drive off with a short pass to Mike Davis for a TD. Joey Slye’s extra point was blocked. 15-7

With :29 left on the clock, Justin Herbert’s pass to Keenan Allen was intercepted by Donte Jackson and returned 66 yards, all the way down to LA’s 8-yard line. With only :10 left on the clock, Carolina’s offense was unable to punch it in for a TD, and settled for another field goal. 18-7


Charlotte Observer

The third quarter was very uneventful. The Chargers offense just couldn’t seem to get into any sort of rhythm and the Panthers were just focused on maintaining. The Chargers did drive far enough on their last drive of the quarter to set up a Michael Badgley field goal. 18-10


Carolina had the ball to begin the 4th quarter, and once again drove down far enough for Joey Slye to kick his fourth field goal of the day. 21-10

Finally, the Chargers offense found its footing. With 4:44 left in the game, Justin Herbert connected with Keenan Allen for a 14-yard touchdown. Chargers left the offense on the field, but failed to pick up the two-point conversion. 21-16

The Chargers got the ball back with under a minute to go and attempted to mount a comeback, but couldn’t make it happen.



Carolina Panthers

Teddy Bridgewater: 22/28, 235 yards, 1 TD

Mike Davis: 13 rushes, 46 yards

DJ Moore: 2 receptions, 65 yards

Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert: 34/48, 321 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Austin Ekeler: 12 rushes, 59 yards, 1 TD

Keenan Allen: 12 receptions, 123 yards, 1 TD

Not a very eventful game, but the Panthers were able to pull out the win. The move to 1-2 on the season and look to carry this momentum into their matchup next week with the Cardinals. The Chargers fall to 1-2 and will look to improve next week as they go on the road to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
