Carmelo Anthony Update

The inevitable happened when we found out that the Oklahoma City Thunder and Carmelo Anthony would be looking to go separate ways before the start of the 2018-2019 season.

The Thunder will seek a buy out and use the stretch provision with Anthony’s contract, saving the franchise around $100 million in payroll and taxes.  There could also be some trade value here as some teams could desire a big expiring contract or want to buy him out as well.

Basically in a stretch, the Thunder will take Anthony’s $27 million contract for next season and divide it up over the next three years on their payroll.   By doing that, it brings their current projected luxury tax bill down by about $90 million.

You could almost sense the tension between the 10 time all star and the Thunder immediately following the first round exit playoff loss to Utah, when he was asked post game about coming off of the bench or exploring a different role with the team next season.

Anthony’s response, “I’m not sacrificing no bench role. So that’s out of the question.”

Here’s a response from Anthony after player exit interviews and end of year locker clean outs.

Carmelo Anthony has started every single game that he’s played in during his NBA career and he doesn’t see that ending just yet.

The teams I feel should go after Anthony are the Lakers, Rockets, Heat, Nets, Mavericks, and Trail-Blazers.
