Can Jimmie Johnson turn it around?

Has there ever been a more dominant driver than Jimmie Johnson was during his time from 2006 to 2010? In that timeframe alone, Jimmie had 35 out of his 83 career wins, 81 top five finishes and five straight Cup Championships. He was not only the best driver in those years, he was starting to cement himself as one of the best drivers to ever live.

Between 2011 and 2013, Johnson accumulated 13 wins and won another Series Championship. His worst season finish in that span was sixth place. While he wasn’t as dominant as previous seasons, he was still one of the best that this sport had to offer.

Since 2013, he has only managed to crack the top 10 in standings once, where he surprisingly won his seventh Cup Championship in 2016. Only two other drivers in NASCAR history have accomplished this feat: Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, arguably the two best drivers to ever compete in the sport. It would be an honor for any driver to ever be put in the same conversation as those two.

When it seems like things are starting to go right for Johnson, he has a week like last week in Michigan where he finished in 20th place. It can’t be easy losing a sponsorship after being with them for the last 17 years and accomplishing as much as they have together, but Jimmie needs to get going soon before he is on the outside looking in.

While some may be starting to doubt the #48 car, I know what he is capable of doing in such short amount of time. I know that he still has what it takes to compete with the best and I’d have to say Jimmie agrees:

“I have more to accomplish in this sport. I feel the best I’ve ever felt physically. I’m motivated. I’m focused on winning and chasing more championships.”

If that isn’t the words of a motivated driver that is ready to win now, I don’t know what is.
