ThorSport Racing driver Ben Rhodes overcame NASCAR overtime to claim the win the Camping World Truck Series NextEra Energy 250 Friday night at Daytona International Speedway. The Toyota Tundra held off Jordan Anderson and Cory Roper to take the win. Ryan Truex finished fourth, while Carson Hocevar finished in fifth. Rhodes took the checkered flag .036-seconds ahead of Jordan Anderson. Anderson finished in second place for second consecutive season. Rhodes made a dramatic move for the win as the field came out of the final turn on the last lap. The move shot his truck past Cory Roper, who held the lead for much of the final lap. Jordan Anderson gained dramatically in the closer yards to the line, but could not reel in Rhodes.
Rhodes stated after his win, “As a driver, you’re always asked about what your biggest accomplishment is – this is it. This is, hands down, it. This is the place to be. I can’t even believe it. I’m gonna soak it up for as long as I can. That Darlington win went by too fast, and you just don’t know when you’re gonna get it again. But I’m gonna enjoy this night. Best night of my life, right here.”
Rhodes only led seven laps during the race. Even with that, Rhodes found his way to victory lane. The win is the fourth of his career, and his first since Darlington last season. Raphael Lessard and John Hunter Nemechek each won stages during the race. Nemechek’s race ended during the races final caution, as damage ended his chances for victory. He would rally to finish inside the top ten in seventh. 2020 Truck Series Champion Sheldon Creed finished in sixth even after multiple incidents during the race. Even with the damage to his truck, Creed rallied to finish inside the top ten.
Rookie Hailie Deagan’s second career Truck Series start and first of her rookie season did not go as well as she had probably hoped. Deagan was involved in a lap 80 crash which caused her truck to suffer heavy front end damage. The resulting damage would put her out of contention, and she would finish 24th.
Next Up for the Truck Series!
