- Position: CB
- School: Virginia Tech
- Class: RS Sophomore
- Height: 6’2″
- Weight: 207 lbs.
Caleb Farley was a three-star recruit coming out of Maiden High School in Maiden, North Carolina. He played QB in high school, but was listed as an athlete on most recruiting sites. Farley had a few offers (South Carolina, Ohio, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech) but opted to go to Virginia Tech and transition to WR. He tore his ACL in 2017 and was redshirted, he was then converted to CB in 2018. He burst onto the scene in 2019 with four interceptions and twelve passed defended.
Farley has excellent size and length to play on the outside, where he projects to play. Along with being 6’2″, he’s a solid 207 pounds.
There are reports out there that Farley has been clocked at 4.35 in the 40 yard dash. That is fast for a 6’0″ 190 pound corner, take into account Farley’s size, that is blazing fast. Even if those reports are false, anything under a 4.5 is excellent speed for a big lengthy corner.
Along with being fast, Farley displays top tier athleticism. He has very fluid and explosive hips, transitions smoothly out of his pedal and explodes off the ground when making a play on the ball.
Man coverage: 5
The strength of his game. He blend of length and athleticism makes it effortless for him to keep up with receivers. In press coverage he is often able to just take receivers out of the play completely. The VT coaching staff had no problem putting him out there on a island with the opposing teams number one receiver.
Zone Coverage: 3
He leaves a lot to be desired in this area of his game. He often let’s receivers cross his face and is just able to make up for this with his athleticism. He seems unsure when in zone and will need to polish up this part of his game.
Awareness/Football IQ: 3
With his experience playing on the opposite side of the ball, he is excellent at anticipating routes, but seems to sometimes just lack the knowledge of a guy who has played the position this whole life.
Ball Skills: 5
He played receiver when he arrived at VT, of course he has excellent ball skills. He tracks, adjusts and high points the ball flawlessly.
Tackle/Run Defense: 2
Despite his size, Farley seems unwilling to lower his shoulder and defend the run. A lot of missed attempts on his tape, will need to get more consistent.
Farley had a non-contact ACL tear in 2017 and missed time in 2019 with back spasms. Nothing that will cause teams to take him off their board, but something to note of.
With defenses becoming more and more man coverage based, Farley could become a top corner in this league. He still needs to become more comfortable in zone coverage and become a more willing tackler, but that will come in time. With his size, length, athleticism and the the fact he has only played CB for TWO YEARS, he has the highest upside of any other corner in the class. He should be CB1 on all boards.
First round, Top 15 pick
