Browns Cut Kicker After 4 Misses Cost Them Win

By the look on his face, Zane Gonzalez knew the second he missed his game-tying field goal attempt Sunday that his time with the Browns was over.

After his Week 1 overtime game winner was blocked, he was given a second chance against the Saints. Gonzalez then missed 2 extra points and, more importantly to the result, 2 field goals, losing 21-18 in heartbreaking fashion.

The Browns waived Gonzalez on Monday, looking now to the services of rookie kicker Greg Joseph. Joseph made all three of his attempts in the preseason with the Dolphins.

The Browns have lost (or tied) 9 games by 6 or fewer points during their current 19-game winless streak, including their last 3, showing how impactful a good place kicker is to Cleveland’s turnaround.

Cleveland hosts the New Yorks Jets this Thursday, where they’ll be hoping Joseph is a major improvement to their parting kicker.
