Brighton adds Swiss Super Striker Andi Zeqiri

Amidst the increasing rumors that Brighton could possibly lose their young right back Tariq Lamptey to Bayern Munich at some point soon, the club was busy on Thursday completing a move for Swiss striker Andi Zeqiri. The 21-year-old has joined the Southern England side on a four-year contract after the Seagulls paid around four million euros to Swiss side Lausanne-Sport. Zeqiri is Lausanne’s most expensive transfer departure in their history, besting their previous record that stood for over two decades by almost three million euros.

Zeqiri was one of the Swiss Challenge League’s top performers last season. He finished the year second in the league in goals with 17 and third in goal contributions (goals + assists) with 25. It was largely thanks to his consistent dominance up top that helped lead Lausanne-Sport to the top of the table in the Challenge League and immediate promotion up to the Super League, Switzerland’s top division.

It’ll be interesting to see how Brighton manager Graham Potter will utilize his newest forward. The youngster has previously played as an all-out striker as well as a second striker in the same ilk as Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino. That ability to be adept as both a goalscorer and facilitator could allow him to receive more playing time than fans may expect. But with fellow striker Neal Maupay as the club’s most important attacker, Aaron Connolly as the next in line at the moment, and Viktor Gyokeres also recently acquired during this transfer window, it may be a while until Zeqiri can earn that chance. Not to mention, the club also has Florin Andone.

However, with Zeqiri’s unbelievable success already in other leagues, he may be exactly what Graham Potter and company need to once again remain a Premier League side.
