Breaking: Padres Sign Machado

Breaking: Padres Sign Machado

The wait is finally over!

One of the two biggest free agents (the other being Bryce Harper) on the market this MLB offseason has found a new home just over 100 miles south of Los Angeles.

Manny Machado, a two-time Gold Glove winner, and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a contract that will bring Machado to the rebuilding effort for the slumping team. Machado spent part of last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after Corey Seager was injured and was forced to miss the rest of the season. However, it was clear Machado wouldn’t be staying in Los Angeles.

With Seager returning this year and the Dodgers already having a huge payroll there wasn’t much of a fit for Machado and the Dodgers most likely wouldn’t be able to afford him for his big asking price.

While rumors have floated around about Machado and the Padres it is still a bit of a surprise to see Machado agree to join a subpar team in the thick of rebuilding. This means that Machado will be crucial to their future success.

Machado will sign with the Padres on a 10-year contract and earn $300 million. This means Manny Machado just signed not only the biggest MLB contract in history, but signed the biggest free agency contract in American sports history.

Last season, at shortstop, Machado’s line read .273/.338/.487 while stacking up 37 home runs and 107 RBI’s. He will most likely return to 3rd base with the Padres.
