Breaking: NY Jets Officially Sign Sam Darnold

Sam Darnold might be the 255th player, of the 256 players who drafted, to sign a rookie deal – but his pay is all that matters.

According to ESPN, sources are saying that Sam Darnold’s camp and the New York Jets have finally reached an agreement to his rookie year contract, agreeing to a 4-year $30.2 million contract with a $20 million signing bonus. With that, he will be at the team facility today.

New York Jets General Manager – Mike Maccagnan had this to say:

“We are very pleased to have Sam join the team, this is what both sides wanted all along and we’re eager to get Sam on the practice field while it’s still early in training camp.”

The two parties have been engaged in a battle for some time now, mainly over verbiage spelled out regarding guaranteed money. It now appears that both sides have come to a resolution.

Darnold, who was drafted from the number 3 spot of the NFL draft, has missed 3 practices already. He is currently expected to compete for the starting QB position, with Josh McCown penciled in as the starting QB to begin the season and Teddy Bridgewater also on the bench and at the ready.

Jets head couch Todd Bowels stated that he’s not “…disappointed” about the length of the contract negotiations – “It’s part of the business. You deal with something every year. I’ve got a bunch of guys out here to coach and get ready for the season.”

Darnold’s contract is one of the top 5 biggest in the franchise’s history.
