After 11 days filled to the brim with nonstop rumor and drama, world football’s greatest son Leo Messi announced that he intends to remain at his beloved Barcelona for at least one more season. In an exclusive interview with Goal.com, the most talked-about man in sports poured out his heart on a bevy of topics ranging from his issues with current Barca president Josep Bartomeu, the moment he told his family he wanted to leave the club he’s called home for more than two decades, and what made him change his mind and elect to remain at the Camp Nou.
Messi’s final decision essentially came down to the logistics surrounding his cartoonishly high 700 million euro release clause. No team in history has come even close to spending even half of that amount of money for any player, so even though this is Messi, no team would bite. Messi said, “Now I am going to continue in the club because the President told me that the only way to leave was to pay the 700 million euro release clause, and that is impossible.” According to multiple reports over the past several days, if this release clause was his only way out then Messi’s only other option was to take Barcelona to court, which is something he would never do.
With all this being said, this does not put an end to all the anxiety surrounding Barca at this moment. The club is still very much in shambles as they intend to sell, or simply cut loose many players who have helped shape the club for many years. So far, the only big name to leave is Ivan Rakitic, who left for Sevilla earlier this week, but Luis Suarez is reportedly close to a move to Juventus. No to mention that Messi still seems ready to leave next year. Nevertheless we will continue to look into the mammoth overhaul at the Camp Nou over the next several weeks.
