According to multiple reports coming from Spain and Germany, Espanyol’s defensive midfielder, Marc Roca, is set to join Bayern Munich. The reigning European champions have agreed to send 15 million euros to the recently relegated Spanish side as an initial payment for the young wunderkind, and they’ve further agreed to sign Roca to a four-year contract with the additional option for a fifth.
Roca was given permission to leave for Bayern Munich on Saturday where the 23-year-old is said to have undertaken his medical evaluation. With everything else seemingly agreed upon, Bayern may announce their newest signing as early as tomorrow or Monday. When this move is made official, Roca will become the club’s fifth signing and the second that actually cost Bayern money. Previously, Hansi Flick brought in goalkeeper Alexander Nübel from Schalke, center back Tanguy Kouassi from Paris Saint-Germain, defensive midfielder Adrian Fein from Hamburg, and winger Leroy Sane from Manchester City. With Roca now closing in on a move, Flick has spent only 65 million euros this summer.
Speaking of Flick, he was a tad hush-hush about the move while speaking to the media on Saturday. “I can’t say anything, I won’t confirm or deny it, I won’t do either. My focus is on the Hertha game.”
Marc Roca has been earmarked by several clubs over the past couple of seasons. Praised for both his passing ability and his defensive prowess as a number six, the lifetime Espanyol player was nearly picked up by Atletico Madrid. Seemingly the only reason why he isn’t playing for Diego Simeone right now is that they were unable to ship off Thomas Partey, who Roca was supposed to replace. Other squads who were looking into buying Roca included Arsenal and Real Madrid.
Once Roca does finally join the ranks at Bayern Munich, he’ll most likely be able to receive a good amount of playing time at his primary position. Joshua Kimmich would usually be the club’s easy first choice there, but he’s mostly been playing at right back. Javi Martinez would usually slot in as the starter with Kimmich on the back line, but he is rumored to be closing in on a move back to Athletic Club de Bilbao. And finally, Adrian Fein is not quite up to the level Flick wants at this point.
In other Bayern transfer news, the club is reportedly also interested in acquiring Chelsea’s young winger Callum Hudson-Odoi. However, according to TransferMarkt, Chelsea have rejected an offer from Bayern that would’ve included a loan deal with the option to buy for 70 million euros next season. It’s unlikely that this move will happen during this window, but we will keep tabs on any updates as they come.
