Austin Cindric Wins at Phoenix Raceway for the Second Time in as Many Races
Austin Cindric ended his 2020 Xfinity Series season with a win and a championship at Phoenix Raceway. After finding his way to victory lane in the season opener at Daytona, Cindric again raced to another win to start the 2021 Xfinity season. Cindric won the Call 811 Before You Dig 200 at Phoenix Raceway Saturday after fending off a late race challenge from Ty Gibbs.
Chaotic Two Lap Shoot Out Decides Victor
A late race restart set up a mad dash to checkered flag, as both Austin Cindric and Justin Allgaier led the field to the green flag to set up the final two lap dash. However, chaos would ensue, as Jeb Burton made a bold move to the inside to challenge for the win. Burton slide up the track in turn one, bouncing off Daniel Hemric who in turn hit Justin Haley. Haley would make hard contact with the wall and finish in 26th. Hemric, who had a top five car all race long, would finish 23rd.
Up ahead of the chaos, Austin Cindric continued to lead coming out of turn two, with Allgaier to his outside. As Cindric slid up the track, Allgaier moved up as well. His No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro would slide too high, collecting dust on his tires which put him into the wall. While Cindric would continue on, Allgaier would soldier on to an eighth place finish. This left Cindric to defend against a hard charging Ty Gibbs, who claimed the ARCA Menards Series race the day prior. Gibbs was no match for Cindric, as the Penske Racing driver held on to lead and claimed his second win of the 2021 season.
Brandon Brown finished in third position Saturday, a career best for the driver of the No. 68 Chevrolet. Riley Herbst and AJ Allmendinger would round out the top five in fourth and fifth respectively. Finishing in sixth was Jeb Burton, while Bayley Currey claimed a career best seventh place finish. Justin Allgaier finished in eighth after challenging for the win with two laps to go, while Brett Moffitt finished a solid ninth for his OurMotorsports team. Rounding out the top ten was Jeremy Clements who secured another solid finish for his family owned team.
