Astros Pitcher Francis Martes Suspended for Whole 2020 Season

The 2020 preseason has NOT been kind to the Houston Astros.  As announced today by Major League Baseball, Francis Martes has been suspended 162 games, without pay, for testing positive for the PED Boldenone. An anabolic steroid used in veterinary practices, and commonly given to horses. This is the second time that Martes has tested positive for PED’s.

While the former top prospect has not commented on the situation, the players’ association has issued a statement:

“Throughout our system, players are educated through MLB’s drug prevention and treatment programs,” the Astros said in a statement. “We hope that Francis will learn from this experience moving forward.”

24 years old, he has faced significant challenges since making his debut for the Astros in the summer of 2017. In his debut season Martes sported a 5-2 with a 5.80 ERA in four starts and 28 relief appearances for the Astros. He clocked 69K’s and walked 31 in 54⅓ innings.

Martes made four starts for Triple-A Fresno in 2018, hurt his elbow and had Tommy John surgery later in the summer; making only three minor league starts in 2019. Martes was in contention for the 5th spot in the Astro’s rotation for 2020.
