Astro’s Lose Gurriel

The Defending World Series Champion Houston Astros will be without their first baseman for the start of the regular season. Yuli Gurriel underwent surgery on Wednesday morning, after injuring his hand before spring training. Doctors removed the hook of the hamate bone on Gurriel’s left hand.

Gurriel, who played in his first full season with the Astros in 2017 after an outstanding career in Cuba and a brief tenure in Japan, ended with a .299 Batting Average, and slugged 18 Home runs and 75 RBI.

Luckily for the Astros this injury has an expected recovery time of roughly 6 weeks, so Gurriel is not expected to miss a significant amount of the season. However, once Gurriel does return he does have to serve a 5-game suspension following his infamous inappropriate gesture made towards Yu Darvish during the World Series.

Gurriel had only 2 at-bats in spring training before going back to Houston for the surgery, with his second at-bat resulting in a home run. Looks like the 6-foot, 33 year old was off to a good start before this setback.
