Anderson Shocks Federer At Wimbledon

In a result that no one would have predicted, Kevin Anderson of South Africa stunned reigning champion Roger Federer at Wimbledon on Wednesday by winning 2-6, 6-7(5-7), 7-5, 6-4, and 13-11.
The match started out routinely enough with Federer taking the opening set fairly easily.
Anderson started to find his footing in the second to take it to a tiebreak that Roger was able to claim.
The third set continued to see Anderson’s game raise while Federer’s started to dip slightly. Federer got to match point but Anderson was able to stave it off to come back to take the set.
After another set to Anderson, the fifth set became a battle for who could break the other first. That would not come until the 23rd game of the set.
Serving at 30-30, Federer hit his first double fault of the entire match giving Anderson the break point opportunity. After Federer netted his next forehand, Anderson broke the reigning champ. A solid service game later and Anderson was the one raising his arms in victory.

Counting the first two sets of the match, Federer had won 34 consecutive sets at Wimbledon and hadn’t lost a match here since in the semi-finals in 2016.

It is only the third time that Federer has won the first two sets and then lost the match at a Grand Slam. His record now stands at 266-3 in that regard.
Many had been hoping for a Federer-Nadal final on the 10th anniversary of their famous 2008 final that many claim as the greatest match of all time.

Before today, Anderson had never beaten Federer in the four times that they had played.
With the win, Anderson moves on to his second Grand Slam semi-final. He reached the final in last year’s US Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

He will face the winner of the John Isner-Milos Raonic match that is set for today.
