Alexander Romanov is a 20 year old left handed defenceman from Russia. He was drafted 38th overall in 2018 by the Montreal Canadiens. This year he was playing with CSKA Moscow. The news dropped yesterday that the KHL were preventing eleven player agents from negotiating contracts for their clients in their league. Romanov’s agent Dan Milstein was a part of the ban, this will prevent him from resigning with CSKA. Milstein gave Montreal fans hope by confirming in an interview with Journal de Montréal that his client would be signing with the Habs.
The 5’11 player is a smooth skating offensive defenceman. He isn’t a defensive liability and enjoys physical play. He has a good chance of making the team out of camp and should be able to have a positive impact on the team immediately. The Canadiens have been looking for a left handed dman to join Shea Weber on the top pairing for a while and he has all the tools to excel in that role. Romanov could be a dark horse candidate for the Calder in 2020-21. Montreal fans should be excited for his arrival.
The window for signing KHL free agents begins on May 1st every season because deals in the KHL expire at the end of April. The Habs have already signed russians V.Demchenko and A.Khisamutdinov. At this point, it is sure that Romanov will be signing with the Habs. The only question that remains is : When?
More information will be released as it becomes available.
