The 49ers were without key players Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Bosa and George Kittle going into their week 3 matchup against the New York Giants. Nick Mullens was tasked with leading the offense and did not disappoint in his performance.
The 49ers were limited to field goals in the first quarter as they could not finish drives and did land on top of a Giant’s fumble to take advantage of a turnover. They did finish the half with a 10-yard rushing touchdown from running back Jerick McKinnon who was filling in for injured running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman.
In the 3rd quarter the 49ers began to pull away with the lead as rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk scored his first touchdown of the season by way of a 19-yard rush. The scoring play was followed by a Nick Mullens 30-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Wilson Jr. as the 49ers kept their lead and went on to win a game they had control of since the opening kickoff.
Although the dominant win did come against the struggling New York Giants, who were also without star running back Saquon Barkley, the 49ers demonstrated they are ready for adversity and the team has plenty of depth to answer for players being injured.
Nick Mullens demonstrated zero nervousness when asked to step up to the starting role. Mullens played brilliantly leading the offense and finished the game 25 of 36 for 343 yards and 1 touchdown pass as the 49ers went on to win 36-9.
