New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles 7/29/2020 Game Recap

Following the Miami Marlins’ COVID outbreak, the New York Yankees were forced to miss two games against the Philadelphia Phillies. In what should’ve been the day of the Yankees’ home opener for the 2020 season, they headed to Baltimore to play the Orioles, who were supposed to finish up a 3-game series against the Marlins today.

The Yankees sent their new ace, fresh off an impressive 5 inning game against the defending Champions Gerrit Cole to the mound, while Baltimore sent Asher Wojciechowski to combat the power of the Yankees. After taking the first pitch for a strike, DJ LeMahieu, who finished the game 4 for 5 with 2 RBI’s, smacked an opposite field home run off the right field foul pole to put the Bombers up 1-0. A sac fly RBI by Mike Ford put the Yanks’ up 2-0.

Pedro Severino, catcher for the O’s was beaten up pretty early in the game. With big Aaron Judge at the plate, he was called for a catchers interference when his glove got in the way of the big swing by Judge. Just two batter later, he was called for another catchers interference when Giancarlo Stanton made contact with his glove on a swing. Following those, a 3-2 foul ball by Aaron Hicks shot back and caught him in the knee. A painful first inning for the Orioles catcher.

Following a lead off walk to Austin Hays in the bottom of the first, and a strike out to Anthony Santander, Gerrit Cole gave up a double to Jose Iglesias to plate the Orioles first run of the ball game. After a lead off walk to DJ Stewart in the third inning, Cole retired 14 in a row before giving up a 2 out double to Renato Nunez in the 7th.

Aaron Judge hit his first home run of this 60 game campaign, an absolute towering shot to deep left. The game against Baltimore is Judge’s 400th game, and he now has 111 career home runs. Two batters later, Aaron Hicks also cashed in his first home run of the year to put the Yankees up 5-1 in the third.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Evan Phillips replaced Asher Wojciechowski on the mound in the sixth. DJ LeMahieu registered his second RBI of the game following an RBI single to left, and Aaron Judge also got his second RBI after a single to center plated Gio Urshela. Phillips would eventually be replaced by Shawn Armstrong. With the Yankees up 7-3 in the 7th following the Renato Nunez double, Dwight Smith Jr. hit a 2 run blast off of Cole. A double by the next batter Pedro Severino ended the day for Cole. He went 6.2, giving up 4 hits, 3 earned runs, and struck out 7.

Cole was replaced by journeyman pitcher Luis Avilan, who came in and walked the first batter he faced, before getting Austin Hays to pop out to Judge in right. Chad Green replaced Avilan after a scoreless top of the eight, and pitched a scoreless bottom half of the eighth. The Yankees added 2 runs in the ninth, and Brooks Kriske, making his MLB debut held the Orioles scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Yankees the 9-3 win.

The Yankees move to 3-1 on the season, and the Orioles move to 2-2. The two teams will play the second and final game of the series tomorrow in Baltimore, before the Yankees host the Red Sox in the Bronx, and the Orioles host the Rays at Camden Yards.
