2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Update: CAF

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be a little different than usual since it will be played in November through December instead of June through July, but World Cup Qualifying is going to reach it’s final stages here soon, so we are going to take a look at each confederations’ qualifying format and where they are in the qualifying stages. I am going to start with the Confederation of African Football. There are three stages of qualifiers for the 54 nations that compete in FIFA, but only 5 get to advance to the final stage, the FIFA World Cup. Let’s take a look at how it’s going down in Africa currently.

First Round

28 teams ranked 27-54 played home-and-away over two legs where the 14 winners advanced to the 2nd round. For those that do not know soccer uses aggregate on two leg matches. So whoever scores the most goals in both games combined advances.

Ethiopia defeated Lesotho 1-1. You may ask how did they win in a draw? Ethiopia scored when they were the away team, which carries the tie-breaker.

Zimbabwe defeated Somalia 3-2

Namibia defeated Eritea 4-1

Tanzania defeated Burundi 2-2. This time both teams scored 1 goal on the road, so they went into a penalty shootout, which Tanzania won 3-0.

Djibouti defeated Eswatini 2-1

Malawi defeated Botswana 1-0

Angola defeated Gambia 3-1

Liberia defeated Sierra Leone 3-2

Mozambique defeated Mauritius 3-0

Guinea-Bissau defeated Sao Tome and Principe 3-1

Equatorial Guinea defeated South Sudan 2-1

Togo defeated Comoros 3-1

Sudan defeated Chad 3-1

Rwanda defeated Seychelles 10-0
