J.T Realmuto, a 29 year old, has proven to be the best catcher in the MLB this season. Entering this off-season as an unrestricted free agent, the former Phillie will surely get paid generously for his services.
Having played with Miami and Philadelphia across seven seasons in the Majors, Realmuto has developed constantly and is now a legitimate dual threat offensively and defensively. He had a career year in 2019 in which he earned his first gold glove to go along with his second consecutive All Star Game appearance.
This year, he had 11 HRs to go along with a .266 batting average across 46 games in the Covid-19 shortened season. On top of all his other qualities, J.T.’s bat can step in at first base or DH when he’s not behind the plate.
While the Phillies did extend a qualifying offer, it’s highly likely that Realmuto will turn down the one year $18.9 million contract in favor of a long term agreement and a raise. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
We will keep updating on his situation as information becomes available.
