The National Hockey League made some major changes to next season’s schedule on Thursday.
Due to uncertainties surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the NHL ruled they will not be proceeding with the 2021 Bridgestone Winter Classic in Minneapolis, Minnesota, or the 2021 Honda All-Star Weekend in Sunrise, Florida.
The Winter Classic was originally set to be played at Target Field, home of Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins, on January 1, 2021. The annual outdoor game was to be played between the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues. NHL’s All-Star Weekend, hosted by the Florida Panthers, was scheduled for January 29-30, 2021 at BB&T Center, their home arena.
The NHL said in a statement that they do intend to return to both Minneapolis and Sunrise for these events in the future.
As of Thursday, the agreement between the NHL and NHLPA for a tentative January 1 start date to the 2020-21 season remains on the table.
