With the 5th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins drafted Tua Tagovailoa out of Alabama in hopes that the team has found a franchise quarterback in Tagovailoa. Before the start of the season, Tagovailoa was named the backup to starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. After making his NFL Debut against the New York Jets, he is now getting a chance to start in the NFL. On Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins announced that Tua Tagovailoa has been named starting quarterback over Ryan Fitzpatrick according to Adam Schefter. Tagovailoa first start in the NFL will come next Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.
In 3 seasons with Alabama, Tagovailoa threw for 7,442 yards, 81 touchdowns, 11 interceptions with a passer rating of 199.4. On the ground, he ran for 348 yards and 9 touchdowns in 105 attempts. Leading into the NFL Draft, there were injury concerns about Tua Tagovailoa due to him suffering a dislocated hip against Mississippi State causing him to play in only nine games in his last season in Alabama.
