RB Leipzig added speedy winger Justin Kluivert from Roma on a one-year loan spell on Monday afternoon. The deal is said to cost the upstart German side around a million euros and includes a clause where Leipzig may make the deal permanent for an undisclosed fee. For the 21-year-old, this will be his third club to date and his first test in the German top flight. Before playing at Roma, the son of legend Patrick Kluivert started out at Ajax.

Leipzig sporting director Markus Krösche praised the move for Kluivert, and said that their newest player would “add an important element to our attack in what will be an intense season.” Kluivert can best be described as a raw talent who may need some time to gain the intangibles a player needs to reach that next level. While at Roma, he averaged around 57 minutes per appearance and accumulated 18 goals+assists during that time. He did however play his best football while competing in the Europa League, where he notched a goal every 180 minutes. Not bad for a prospect on the rise.

Luckily, because he’s only 21, Kluivert still has time to become a star on the global stage, just as his father did in the 1990s. Speaking to the media following his move this afternoon, the Netherlands International said that “RB Leipzig have shown me in many good conversations that a transfer (loan) to the club would be ideal for my development and to make the next step in my development. My goal is to gain playing time.”

Right now, there might not be a better league for player development. The Bundesliga sports some of the most exciting young talent from Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland to Giovani Reyna and Alphonso Davies. However, it’s become clear that other than Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig may be the best team in Germany at cultivating young stars. Over the past few years, the East German club has introduced the world to players like Timo Werner and Naby Keita.

Now, Leipzig’s newest project will team up with some of Germany’s most exciting young players including Dani Olmo, Christopher Nkunku, Tyler Adams, and Dayot Upamecano.
