Liverpool wunderkind Rhian Brewster has signed a three-year deal with Sheffield United after the Blades agreed to send a club record 23.5 million pound transfer fee to Anfield. Up until this point, the 20-year-old was a major transfer target for a number of Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. However, with the Blades unable to score a single goal so far this season, they were in desperate need to add a game-changer in the attack. So they chucked the cash that was necessary to pick up their man.
This deal is said to also include a 15% sell-on clause, which means that if Sheffield elects to sell Brewster later on, Liverpool will receive 15% of the final fee, and a buy-back clause, which means that Liverpool can bring Brewster back for an undisclosed amount. Those add-ons will last for three years.
Brewster was one of Liverpool’s prized young players dating back to when they brought him in from Chelsea in 2015. After he signed his first professional contract with the club in 2017, he made four appearances in all competitions and thoroughly impressed his teammates and coaches. With that being said, Liverpool didn’t need the young striker. Beyond the fact that they already had, and have, Roberto Firmino, Brewster was also behind Divock Origi in the depth chart.
That issue started to rear it’s head in 2019, when he was loaned out to Swansea City. While in Wales, the then teenager put the team on his back and scored 11 times over 22 games, including one in the EFL Championship Promotion Playoffs. He then returned to Merseyside, however fans were prepared to see him leave once again, which he now has.
During his introductory press conference, Brewster shared his excitement with the move. “It feels good to be here and I just can’t wait to get started.” He continued, “I am ready to come in and show everyone what I’ve got.”
Brewster is now one of six center forwards, according to TransferMarkt. While he certainly won’t be in the running for a starting spot right away, it’ll be interesting to see how he eases into the club.
