Bayern Munich may be in danger of losing yet another midfielder during this summer window if reports from France are proven correct. Late on Monday, L’Equipe announced that French midfielder Michael Cuisance is close to leaving the European giant after only one season to play for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United. This move could prove to be a massive coup for the newly promoted West Yorkshire club, as Bielsa has needed another top of the line playmaker to provide more longterm support.
Leeds are expected to pay around 20 million pounds for the former Borussia Monchengladbach standout. This agreement will also include a buy-back clause that they can trigger if they choose to bring back the player later down the road. He will join Leeds as one of the club’s biggest signings of the summer, joining guys like Helder Costa, Illan Meslier, Rodrigo, and Diego Llorente. If the 20 million pound price tag is confirmed, Leeds will have paid around 80 million during this window so far.
It’s easy to understand why Cuisance should be pleased with this possible move. While he did win a plethora of different trophies during his one year in Bavaria, it’s hard to praise him as a key contributor for that success. The Strasbourg native has so far appeared in only 11 matches for Super Bayern and has added a single goal for his troubles. The issue for Cuisance is that if he hopes to stay at Bayern, he’ll have to surpass some of the best midfielders in Europe to find any consistent play time. And while Thiago, Phil Coutinho, and Ivan Rakitic are all gone from the club, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, and Thomas Müller are all easily above him on the depth chart, as are guys like Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, and possibly Jamal Musiala.
If he does complete a switch to Elland Road, he will almost certainly guarantee himself a major spot in Bielsa’s starting 11. Not only will he be leaned on for his strong play as both a passer and creator, but as someone who understands how to win matches and trophies. While he can’t be thanked for much of Bayern’s success last season, he was rubbing shoulders with those who were, like Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller. So if he was able to absorb that much needed information, Leeds may be bringing in a player with a pedigree that could push them to the next level.
