According to Fabrizio Romano, club officials at Barcelona appear to be inching ever closer to signing Lyon striker Memphis Depay. The former Manchester United bust has reportedly agreed to personal terms with Barca and only awaits an agreement with his current club to make the move official. If Depay does make the move to the Camp Nou, the lofty expectations he once harbored while at Manchester United will surely return.

Over 13 appearances in Ligue One last season, the Dutchman scored nine times. While that in and of itself was impressive, he faired even better in the Champions League, scoring 6 times over 8 matches. Along with fellow attacker Moussa Dembele, Depay was one of the key components to Lyon’s improbable run to the UCL semifinal and has been a hot target for some of the biggest clubs in Europe this summer.

Depay should be able to slip right into new manager Ronald Koeman’s starting 11, especially if Barca legend Luis Suarez is able to find a new permanent home. Koeman reportedly told Suarez that he was going to move on from the Uruguayan at that he should find a new club. Since then, Juventus and Inter Milan have both shown interest in the 33-year-old.

Additionally, Koeman has worked extensively with Depay in the past. From 2018 to 2020, Koeman served as manager for the Dutch National Team. During that time, Depay played in 20 matches and scored 11 times, including against Portugal, France, and twice against Germany. At least from a national team perspective, Koeman brought out the best from Depay during their pairing.

In other news, Barcelona are also reportedly attempting to reach a deal with another Dutch footballer, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. At the moment, the move appears to be a long shot.
