It’s official, Toronto once again has the coach of the year. Nick Nurse received 90 out of 100 votes on Saturday, giving him an overwhelming victory. Dwayne Casey won the award as Toronto’s coach in 2018.
The Raptors clinched the second best record in the NBA in the COVID-19 shortened season, going 53-19. The team was on pace to have a better record than last season, an impressive feat given that Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard was on the team at the time.
While the Raptors lost one of the best players in the league, the rest of their core remained the same. Nurse’s incredible defensive strategy coupled with the team’s championship chemistry has kept them as a contender one year later.
Coaches Mike Budenholzer of the Milwaukee Bucks and Billy Donovan of the Oklahoma City Thunder tied for first place for the National Basketball Coaches Association award, voted on by fellow NBA coaches. Nick Nurse came in third there, but came out on top for the league-wide award by a wide margin.
