Paris Saint-Germain higher ups announced on Monday that their superstar striker Kylian Mbappe will be forced to sit out around three weeks after he suffered an ankle injury during the club’s 1-0 win in the French Cup final. The 21-year-old received the injury after Saint-Etienne defender Loïc Perrin put in a hard slide tackle. He was forced off the field, as was Perrin who got a red card for the action, and was later found to have sustained a sprain to his right ankle with an additional external ligament injury.
This prognosis instantly puts Mbappe’s future in some doubt, at least for this season. While PSG is finished with all their domestic duties until late August, the club is gearing up for the Champions League restart. They are set to take on Italian upstarts Atalanta in what is sure to be even more intriguing if Paris are without their talisman goalscorer.
Of course, PSG still have Neymar up front, but it’ll be interesting to see if Thomas Tuchel’s side fares as well as they would have had they still have the FIFA 21 cover star available. If they are able to successfully dispatch Atalanta, they will next need to take on either a depleted RB Leipzig or an Atletico Madrid team that has already eliminated defending champions Liverpool before the competition was halted in March.
Nevertheless, if this injury forces Mbappe to shut down until the start of next season, he will finish the 2019-20 campaign with an impressive 30 goals over 34 appearances across all official club matches and would’ve certainly been a finalist for this year’s Ballon d’Or had it not been canceled.
