The Norris Trophy is handed out to hockey’s best defenseman each year. While offensive output plays a huge part of deciding the winner, defensive stats are also taken into account too. The nominees for the 2019-20 season are John Carlson of the Washington Capitals, Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators and Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Carlson started off the season really hot and was a favorite to win the award from the early onsets of the season. In 69 games, he registered 15 goals and 60 assists for 75 points in which he led all defencemen in assists and points. Of those 75 points, 49 of them came on 5-on-5 which is the most of any defenseman in the league and the other 26 came on the power play which is the second most of all defencemen. He also led all defensemen with 6 game winning goals. Of Norris Trophy nominees, he had the least amount of penalty minutes (26) and highest shooting percentage (7.9%).

Roman Josi

Josi recorded 16 goals and 49 assists which gives 65 total points on the season. He also ended the year with a +/- rating of +22 and averaged the 3rd most ice time averaging 25:47 a night. Of all defensemen, he took the most shots on net with 260.

Victor Hedman

(James Guillory/USA TODAY Sports)

Hedman played three less games than both Carlson and Josi played but he still did decently well scoring 11 goals and helping on 44 of them for 55 points. Between him, Carlson and Josi, he had the best +/- rating of +27.

As Hedman recorded a significant amount of fewer points than Carlson and Josi did, voters may find it tough to vote for him. Carlson is probably the favorite to win the award but Josi could garner votes from members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association and may have a chance to win the award.
