Considering the salary cap is probably going to remain the same next season, a lot of teams are going to have to make difficult decisions regarding the future of their rosters and the Penguins are no strangers to that.

Jim Rutherford believes it’s going to be complicated to keep the goalie tandem of Matt Murray and Tristan Jarry together, as both of their deals are expiring. He had this to say about the situation : ‘’I’ll say this : if we are going to keep both of them, we would have to move a few things around. There are some very, very tough decisions ahead.’’.

Unless Jim finds a way around the problem, the question becomes the following : what goalie should they keep?

This season Murray, who was their starter for their playoff runs in 2016 and 2017, has struggled immensely posting a .899 save percentage in 38 starts this year. Although he did struggle, Rutherford said he was confident Murray could be a solid number one for the 2020 playoffs. Jarry, who was the clear backup to begin the season, gained a lot of playing time after Murray had a horrible November. His 2.43 GAA and .921 save percentage earned him a spot as a injury replacement for the All Star Game.

Rutherford had this to say about Jarry : ‘’ He was our best goaltender in our past couple of camps, so we knew we had a good one. But the truth is, he played at a higher and more consistent level than we were anticipating.’’

Murray and Jarry, who are both 25 years old, should get a lot of attention in trade rumors these upcoming months. Teams like the Avalanche, Sabres, Oilers and many more should all be extremely interested in adding a young goalie who they can lock up long term. Personally I hope the Penguins trade one to add a piece that could help them now because even if it’s considered a luxury to have such a great tandem, I see no use in having two number one goalies signed for big contracts. They should both be worth a lot on the trade market.

What was once Fleury-Murray has became Murray-Jarry and honestly this is a problem a lot of general managers would kill to have. Murray is already a solid proven goaltender and Jarry seems to have become the Binnington of this season. No matter which goalie they choose to move forward with they’ll be heading in a great direction for the future.
