The Toronto Maple leafs have signed finnish defender Mikko Lehtonen to a 1 year entry level contract.

The defender posted 17 goals and 32 assists for 49 points in 60 games played this past season. He lead the KHL in points among defenseman last season. His release made him the best European free agent available.

The 26 year old is a low risk high reward player for the Leafs. Best case he becomes an offensive defenseman for Toronto and plays top minutes. Worst case he doesn’t pan out, but can still be a solid puck moving defender on the third pairing.

For Toronto, who is struggling with cap space, this signing should make a lot of people happy at that price. I could see him getting first pair minutes with M.Rielly, as well as the second PP unit.

For a team with depth issues, this is the perfect move.
