According to multiple reports from Italy, the mythical Gigi Buffon is set to sign a contract extension that will keep Italy’s greatest goalkeeper at Juventus for at least another season. Tuttosport was the first to announce that the 42 year old Italian legend has arrived to an agreement with club president Andrea Agnelli that will last until the end of next season.

It’s genuinely difficult to try and encapsulate just how much Buffon means to “The Old Lady” and how much Juventus means to the now “Old Man.” Buffon made his first appearance in Turin way back in 2001 after starting his career at Parma in 1995. To put into perspective just how long that is, Gigi Buffon was a “rookie” the same year as guys like Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Kevin Garnett, and Warren Sapp. When he won his first Series A Goalkeeper of the Year in 1999, Juve center back Matthijs de Ligt wasn’t yet born.

While with Juve, Buffon has won 9 Serie A league titles, 4 Coppa Italias, and 5 Supercopas. He sports 667 appearances for the club, which is 2nd only to his former teammate Alessandro Del Piero, yet he has the most Serie A appearances in club history with 47 and the most in all UEFA club competitions (Champions League, Europa League, etc.) with a mesmerizing 125. On the international side, he’s a World Cup champion.

Perhaps the only thing Gigi hasn’t been able to do in his long career is win his first Champions League. And that could be the reason why the Tuscan native is not ready to hang up his gloves for the final time just yet. Up until the Coronavirus halted all play last month, Juventus were looking incredibly strong in the competition they haven’t won since 1996 until they found themselves down 1-0 to Lyon after the 1st leg in the Round of 16. Who knows whether or not the Italian dynasty would be able to right the ship.
