This past Saturday we were treated to an extreme display of talent from IBF Super Middleweight Champion, Caleb Plant. (20-0, 12 KO’s) Plant made easy work of his opponent, Vincent Feigenbutz (31-3, 28 KO’s), who had been fighting outside of Germany for the first time in his professional career. Through elite ring generalship, good head movement, superb hand speed and combinations Plant was able to earn his 20th professional victory through way of TKO. The question next being, what is next for Plant and the rest of the world champions in the 168 pound weight class?

Unification is what boxing fans and the champions want when thinking of the immediate future in the super middleweight weight class. The easiest fight to make in this weight class would be between IBF Champion Caleb Plant and WBC Champion David Benavidez. (22-0, 19 KO’s) Two years ago, few had heard of Plant other than his amateur background as a Golden Gloves Champion and a US Olympian alternate. Meanwhile, Benavidez was already a full fledged world champion who had earned a reputation as a hard puncher burning through his opponents. Fast forward and it seems that Plant has severely closed the talent gap between the two and has called for a fight to unify titles. David Benavidez, who already has a mandatory defense ordered by the WBC, has welcomed the challenge and it seems the fight could easily be made for the end of 2020.

Other champions at 168 currently stem from the U.K. Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14 KO’s) and Callum Smith (27-0, 19 KO’s) currently hold the WBO and WBA Championship belts. This week alone, Billy Joe Saunders has been linked to boxing superstar, Canelo Alvarez, for a May 2nd showdown for his WBO Super Middleweight Championship. Canelo already owns the WBA “Regular” version of the championship.

Whatever comes for the division in the rest of 2020, lack of bouts does not seem to be in the forecast as boxing continues to enjoy it’s fierce revival into the new decade.
